As one of the oldest card games in the world, there is a lot of interest in baccarat, especially amongst players in South Africa. Baccarat can be traced back to the Middle Ages, where it was played in both Italy and France. Today, the game can be found worldwide, and South African players can get to grips with it just as easily as anybody else. How’s how to play it.

Wagering

All card games begin with a bet, and baccarat is no different. To begin playing baccarat, players need to opt which hand they wish to bet on. On the one hand, you can choose to bet on the player’s hand. Alternatively, you can bet on the banker’s hand. You can, in most baccarat games available for South African players, opt to bet on a tied hand, too.

How To Play Baccarat

online baccarat south africaBaccarat begins with two cards being dealt to the player’s hand, and to the dealer’s hand. Cards are scored by the number they have on them. For instance, all cards displayed 2 are worth 2 points, whilst 6s are worth 6 points. Aces are always worth just a single point, whilst face cards are worth zero, not 10 points. 10s are also counted as zeros in baccarat.

As an example, if you have a 2 of hearts and a 6 of spades, you have a total of 8 points. If you have a 3 of clubs and a Queen of diamonds, you have 3. The two hands are added together to give you a point’s total, and the hand closest to 9 points is the winner. Of course, there are times when a third card must be taken, and South African players may wish to learn about that.

The Third-Card Rule

If the player’s hand has a point’s total of 8 or 9, then they cannot take a third card. The player’s hand will also stand on a 6 or 7, and so a third card is not taken. If the player has 5 points or less on their hand, then a third card must be taken, unless the banker as an 8 or 9 point hand, in which case the banker wins.

The banker will draw a third card based on the player’s third card. If the player draws a 9, 10, face or ace as their third card, the banker will draw if they have 3 or less points, or stand if they have a 4-7 point hand. If the player draws an 8, then the banker will take a third card if they have 2 points or less. If the player has a 6 or 7 for a third card, then the banker takes a third if they have 6 or less points. If the player takes a third card valued at 4 or 5 points, then the bankers draws if they have 5 or less points. Lastly, if the player’s third card is worth just 2 or 3 points, then the banker draws if they have 4 points or less.

Pay-Outs

Players can pick up wins of 1:1 on player hand wins. Betting and winning on the banker’s hand offers up to 1:1 pay-out too, although there is a 5% commission on the bet. Ties pay out at 8:1 in baccarat.
